The cool, bracing air gave an extraordinary vim and snap to the work although hindered at times by a lack ot familiarity with signals on the part ot several substitutes. Bates and Richardson practiced punting, arfer which the ends were put through sharp work in getting down the field on the kick-off. There was no line-up against the second eleven, only signal practice. Sullman took Melendy's place in the Hie. The line-up: Cuddy, left end; Hapgood, left tackle; Whittemore, left guard; Chesbro, centre; Parker, right guard; Stillman, right tackle; Slocum, right end; Pratt, quarterback; Washburn, left half-back; Richardson, right half-back; Bates, full-back. After a few minutes of practice Pratt, Hapgood, Washburn and Slocum retired and Wheeler, Bartlett, Baylis and Barry were put in their positions. With Sheehan out of the line Brown men should not expect too much of the team in their game with Princeton to-day. However, if their snap in practice yesterday was any indication of their spirit for to-day we may hope that Princeton will not win without hard work. Evidently the contributors to the magazine are desirous that their literary efforts be read with an unprejudiced mind, for they are fighting shy about using their names. The first story, "A Matter of Identification,'' is an amusing sketch dealing with an initiation, in which the wrong man was initiated. The horrors of the occurrence were probably somewhat greater to the astonished Mr. Stubbs than they are to the average neophyte. The negro dialect tale is apporantly a fixture in the Brunonian. Its advantage seems to lie in the fact that a very little material will make a pretty good story. "The Mochmage" is fully up to the standard of preceding sketches of a similar nature. "Etchings" has two clever little sketches. The alumni department is distinctly more interesting than in former years. "Under the Elms" also shows evidence of a personality that is refreshing after the cut-and-dried specimens of previous issues. Prof. Langdon has a valuable review of Prof. Moulton's "Literary Study of the Bible." "Brown Stud}'," speaking for the Brunonian, modestly confesses its shortcomings in the past, at the same time bewailing that it is "the only representative of Brown's literary interests." It concludes with a strong plea for contributions of the right sort from the undergraduates, taking a rather optimistic view of their ability iv the literary line. The athletic situation is discussed by an alumnus, who makes the very good suggestion that the $3 tax levied by the Athletic association be collected by the class treasurers.">
