Presidency of the Class Day Supper Committee resulted in the election of H. M. Cole of Phi Upsilon, who contested with J. P. Child, a member of Theta Delta Chi. For Spring Day Speaker, W. B. Francis of Phi Kappa Psi, gained the appointment over A. B. Sinauer. E. Eynon, of Phi Upsilon and chairman of last year's Prom Committee, was elected chairman of the Class Day Committee. W. W. The regular New England Intercollegiate order of events, which includes the medley relay and the medley swim, is to be followed. The medley relay record of 3 mm. 25 2-5 sec. was broken in the meet with Boston University on February 15, when the time for the event was lowered to 3 mm. 21 4-5 sec. The University team in the medley relay will comprise Norman Arnold, J. D. Wells and Ray Hall. Coach Barry expects that the new team in which Wells replaces Borden should be able to lower the record. The medley swim will include Capt. C. C. Barrows, P. K. Bearce and E. B. Williams. R.W.Henry will swim for the University in the 440-yd and C. F. Brace and Ernest Hawkinson will compete in the dives. Norman Arnold and Edward Sittler are to represent the University in the 150-yard backstroke, as will Ray Hall and Henry in the 100--yard free style. In the 200-yard breast stroke Douglas H. Borden and F. J. Laadt or Otto Kerner will swim. The regular University relay team will be used. M. I. T. should furnish the greatest competition in the person of Lucy, who has been a consistent winner in the 150-yard backstroke this season. Jacoosh and Torchio in the 440-yard and sprints, respectively, are also very capable men in their events.">

Haynes is a former New England champion on the visiting team. Hinkston in the 175--class is expected to give Stewart some trouble, as he is one of the most difficult opponents A. C. Cornsweet has met, and gave Cornsweet much trouble last year. The wrestling team is holding regular practice sessions in order that it will be in best form for this meet. The New England championship matches are to be held in Cambridge at the Harvard Gymnasium on March 15 and 16, and the showing of the team Friday will forecast fairly accurately what the results of the championship matches will be. If the team wins at Cambridge, it is possible that it may participate in the national team championship tournament in New York.">

The fact that two fraternities and the non-fraternity men were not represented at the caucus made it impossible to have a majority caucus. This was not known at the time the nominations were made, and the elections were held without any suspicion that they were not in correct form. "We will begin all over and see to it that things are correct this time," said E. B. Marsan, president of the class of 1931, when asked about this last night. The Cammarian Club found it necesary to have the election reheld due to the fact that it is an established rule concerning all class elections that a majority caucus must be assembled before the nominations can be made.">

<div ID="DIVL147" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="1" LABEL="Close to twelve hundred fans saw the Providence College basketball team run rough-shod over the University five, 49-23, last night in the Gymnasium. The outcome of the one-sided affair was never in doubt with the team from the other side of the city jumping into an early lead that it never relinquished. The half time score was 30-8. The record size gathering — composed mostly of Providence rooters on hand to see their team close its season — was dazzled by the fast passing and accurate shooting of the Black and White courtsters. Possession basketball was the type of game employed by the Dominicans, and it was but seldom that any shots were wasted. On the defense the visitors also displayed a strong game, forcing the Brown forwards to shoot from beyond the foul circle. Paul Snyder was the first to put the ball through the hoop with "long Tom" from the far left corner after but two minutes of play. The home team's lead was short lived, however, as Kreiger and Wineapple soon after got free and began to sink scores from all positions and angles. By the time Snyder tallied his second goal, the Smith Hillers had amassed 18 counters. Scores by Heller and Brown were the only other University points garnered in the first period. Neither the rough playing nor the decisive passing of the opening twenty minutes was to be found in the second half. The game became comparatively tame after the hectic first period in which the two officials were kept busy calling fouls. Snyder and Brown did most of the scorins; for the home team in this half, but at no time did they stand out in their shooting at did the Dominican dead shots. Toward the end of the contest both coaches sent second-team combinations on ' the floor.">

Kreiger and Captain-elect Sydla of Providence, and Snyder, Brown and Farber of the Brown team, were the other men who put up good games. Snyder scored six points to follow Heller and Brown for scoring honors on the University team.">

In the early part of the season, the home sextet was beaten by the fast team from Boston, but to-night should tell a different story. The University team has had a very successful season, having won eight games and lost only four. Under the tutelage of Coach Dubuc, the regular line-up will start the drive against the Bostonians with "Wacky" Moulton, Mayo and Walls ready for relief work, as has been the shifting policy of the coach throughout the season in regard to forward line exchange. Boston University has an unusually successful team this year, having lost only one game. The one defeat which they received was at the hands of the powerful Yale sextet, at New Haven. They have lost none to date on their own rink. However, the improvement of the University team since its defeat by B. U. will make this contest probably one of the most hotly contested of the season.">

The attitude of the University has been generally in accord with this demand. College is something more than a glorified "prep" school, we hope. Yet, it is obvious that the undergraduate does not always prove that he has any grounds upon which to make this demand. We do not refer to drinking. We do not care whether the undergraduate drinks or not. What we are referring to is the general conduct of the undergraduates attending social functions held at the University. Dean Randall has seen fit to have the Cammarian Club supervise the conduct of those attending the Senior Frolic. There was good reason for this move, and we can see no objection to it. There is no reason why any undergraduate should not be able to behave in a sufficiently gentlemanly and mature manner. The fact remains, however, that this is not always the case. There is only one way in which those atending the Frolic can prove their maturity, and that is by making the supervision of the Cammarian Club unnecessary. Let it become a tradition that the Cammarian Club shall always supervise thq conduct of those who attend college dances and let this supervision never be necessary. Such a tradition would go far toward removing the brand of puerility.">

<div ID="DIVL183" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="2" LABEL="Not only is the number of students attending college increasing every year, but the number of students who really wish to attend a university is increasing as well. It would be very fine indeed if everyone who wanted a college education could be given it gratis. However, we realize only too well that such a condition is extremely improbable to say the least, and at present downright impossible. There are two factors which prevent a large number of wouldbe college students from ever entering the portals of a university as an undergraduate. The first is the cost of the education as figured in the amount of the tuition. I The second is the cost of the eclu- ] cation figured in relation to the time spent with the time needed for bringing in the money necessary to pay the expenses occurred. Moreover, it is well known that those students who earn their way through college do not receive all the benefits, do not get as much out of college as they should, and are not able to devote as much time to their studies or to other important phases of university life as they wish. This group of men have been denied scholarships because they could not get the necessary marks and carry on their outside work at the same time. Their case and their chance of becoming B. M. O. C. seemed hopeless. But now we have the proposal of Dr. Harvey N. Davis 1901, President of Stevens Institute, who suggests that those students who are "virile minded, with more than the average ability, and a bit of sporting instinct" should be virtually paid for going to college. Dr. Davis' plan is based on an increased tuition, but with large cash refunds for those men who really deserve a college education as shown through their marks and their athletic or other extra-curricular activities, including approved outside work. By this plan those students who are financially handicapped, but who are above average in ability would have little or no difficulty in gaining a college education. This plan is another of individual treatment. The whole realm of education has been shifting over to this standpoint and here we have an example of a practical application of the theory and an especially justifiable one.">

Wants Gentleman's College In the New Republic, Meiklejohn writes that Dean Max McConn of Lehigh University has presented a novel solution to the question of liberal education for this generation in his book College or Kindergarten. He has come to the conclusion that 99 1-2 per cent, of our generation are incapable of liberal understanding. He finds that only one-half of one per cent, have the desire and capacity for learning. He feels that those few who have in them the making of scholars are neglected because the college is trying to teach the majority who really do not want to learn. Mr. McConn proposes an ideal situation of two different colleges : the Gentleman's College and the Student's College. The latter will take under its wing the one-half of one per cent, and really elucate them. The Gentleman's College is for those who go to college not to study but because there is no other satisfying place to which they may go. He says, "Not that I would bar studies entirely from the Gentleman's College. The gentlemen themselves would not desire this. The essential thing is to abandon the idea and pretense that this aspect of their training is fundamental and of predominant importance. Once this clear fact is accepted, studies 'will no longer be allowed to interfere with activities." — Wellesley College News.">

There are records to be smashed and new ones made and the local froth blowers have indulged in some outstanding bouts. Every Saturday night, interdepartmental and interfraternity contests are arranged and the beer battlers repair to the Prince of Wales Tavern, a public drinking place near the universit}'. As they shove their legs under the tables and get set for some serious drinking, there flashes before their eyes the vision of one, Robert Quinlan, who last spring downed 14 quarts of beer between 4 and 10 p. m., and went home under his own steam. Quinlan was at that time a student in the School of Commerce, and he crossed tankards with William Jones, up to that time the heer guzzling champion of the Arts faculty. William couldn't get past his 13th quart and his crown passed to the perspiring brow of Quinlan. He still wears the wreath of hope, but as Saturday night follows Saturday night the capacity of presentday undergraduates steadily increases and the opinion of veteran quaffers is that the champion is soon due for a fall. There were real wagers on the Quinlan- Jones bout and the Jones' •backers dropped $3,000. The contests are conducted by referees, who have formulated a sporting code that covers every contingency that may arise. A score board is at one end of the tavern and as eacli quart bottle is emptied points are tabulated.">

The manuscripts are due on March 1, 1930. Of the first topic the Union says: "A new movement is stirring in both religion and education. The American Sunday-School Union through this offer seeks to get a manuscript which will give inspiration and direction to the movement. The author must write with the conviction that religion is a vital part of education; that religious education has a fitting and lawful place in our American educational system; and that it should have a more fruitful place than it has to-day in the programs of the Christian Church. He should know what has been done and what is being done, but the manuscript must not be a mere history of the movement. It should be constructive and forwardlooking. Futhermore, special consideration should be given to what the movement has done and what it may do in rural America. "The publishers desire to produce a book popular and readable in style, with wide appeal, a book which shall have a convincing message to voters, lawmakers, parents and teachers. It should show the educational worth of the Bible, and of religious teaching based upon it. It should show the best ways open for character building through such education." Concerning the manuscript on "The Heroic Appeal of Christianity to Young People," the Union says : "This offer is based on the conviction that our young people will find in Christianity, when rightly presented to them, a gripping appeal to the finest and noblest living. This manuscript shall present that appeal in a form that will attract and move young people. The literary form may be narration, biography, fiction, discussion, or other as the author may choose. "The religious element in the manuscript must be vital, nondenominational, and operative in modern conditions. Characters portrayed or discussed need not necessarily be such as are engaged in religious vocations, such as ministers or missionaries. What is sought is a book that will interest, appeal to, and move to action young people of high-school age, or those just entering on the business of life." Any one interested in these awards may get all necessary details by applying for them at the Daily Herald Office.">
