For the past few years there has been an enthusiastic and hearty support accorded the eleven and the financial part of the game has been easily taken care of. This year the expenses have been made greater than ever before and the response of the college men must increase accordingly. I have watched foot ball grow in popularity from year to year for the last six years and I think that this sport, together with general field and track athletics, merits more attention, and is in need of more systematic effort for development, than any other sport in which the students of Brown University are interested. Base ball and tennis are now in a position, if I understand matters rightly, to support themselves. The work of the athletic team last spring certainly furnishes every encouragement to the supporters of general athletics, and next spring should certainly see Brown occupying a high place in the New England Inter-collegiale Association, if indeed they do not stand a most excellent chance of winning the championship. In order that Brown may have a creditable foot ball team, no efforts should be spared to interest the students in a determined effort to bring out all the available foot ball"></div></div><div ID="DIVL24" TYPE="PARAGRAPH" ORDER="1"><div ID="DIVL25" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="1" LABEL="material in the university. The continuation of the Inter-scholastic League this fall on the same general plan as that adopted last fall, is to my mind most important. It also seems to me that it is very desirable that the class foot ball teams should be well organized and that a series of games should be arranged for at once between the various classes. With this in view. I would re pectfully suggest that a movement be started by the Brown Herald to raise a fund sufficient to provide for a prize, or prizes, for the class team winning the championship in a series of games between the various classes. In order to assist in attaining this object, if the Brown Daily Herald is willing to take the matter in hand, and to raise a good sum with which may be provided either a class cup, which would be an addition to a collection of trophies to be placed in some selected portion of the gymnasium, or to purchase trophies for the individual members of the victorious team, I will be be pleased to contribute the sum of $10, on the condition that not less than $25 in all be raised."></div></div><div ID="DIVL26" TYPE="PARAGRAPH" ORDER="1"><div ID="DIVL27" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="1" LABEL="I am much pleased to learn that there is so much good material from which a good team can be organized, and if another suggestion from me might be pardoned, I would especially ■urge that this year an experienced trainer be selected for the eleven, and that he be a man of well-known experience in foot ball matters, and, ii possible, be an old foot ball man from either Yale, Harvard or Princeton. Never in the history of the game at Brown have so large and so promising a number of men appeared as candidates for positions."></div></div><div ID="DIVL39" TYPE="PARAGRAPH" ORDER="1"><div ID="DIVL40" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="1" LABEL="To judge from present appearances we will be especially strong in the line, which place has, during former seasons, been rather weak. A center and guards picked from such weighty material as Call, Hastings, Smith, Lancey and Filmer should be able to break a stron ; opposing line. The only fault to be found with them is that they are slow and somewhat awkward. Hastings, the 'old Bowdoin player, is an exception to this rule however, and plays with a snap and dash that the others would do well to imitate -"></div></div><div ID="DIVL41" TYPE="PARAGRAPH" ORDER="1"><div ID="DIVL42" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="1" LABEL="The work with the tackling machine has been of great assistance to the eleven and a steady improvement in tackling of the men has been noticed since the first day's practice. The candidates who are most proficient in this point of the game, which is so difficult to acquire, are Bustard, Richards, Marvel, Matteson, '96, and Filmer. Several other men are not Tar behind, however, and push them hard for honors. In running, the big men show a rate of speed which is surprising, considering their weight. Those who generally lead at the finish are Casey, Marvel, Aldrich and Matteson. Casey has played upon the 'Varsity three years and is pretty cure of a position, as he is a good runner, a fine tackier, and keeps his opponent in the line guessing."></div></div><div ID="DIVL43" TYPE="PARAGRAPH" ORDER="1"><div ID="DIVL44" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="1" LABEL="Among the candidates for half-back Robinson and McCarthy have shown up best, but they are not as last as might be desired. George was out of practice as- he has played very little this summer, devoting all his ttme to base ball. The secoed set was played immediately after the first and the contestants were Hinckley and Henshaw. Henshaw had it all his own way from the start and won the match 6-0, 6-1. We heartily coincide with Mr. Colby in the belief that no efforts should be spared to bring out all available foot ball materi. 1 in the university and believes, with I.lm, that class games would in a great measure do this. The Herald, furthermore, heartily endorses the suggestion of raising a fllhd for a suitable trophy, and will add $10 to the amount contributed by our correspondent. Owing to delay caused by a change of printers ihe Brunonian will not be ready for distribution today until noon. After today the Brunonian will appear at 10 o'clock every Saturday morning.
