The introduction gives a basic historical overview of the sites, as well as insights into the personal journey that led me to write this thesis. Chapter 1, "Under Providence", is a photo essay that seeks to recreate the sensorial experience of being in the tunnel, and to foster familiarity with the physical and social space. Chapter 2, "DIY Archaeology", explores the ways that others have performed their own DIY archaeologies of the Tunnel, despite rarely applying that label themselves. Chapter 3, "At the Margins", explores the various ways I have attempted to understand the site, particularly through the lens of marginality. It focuses on historic conflicts over the use of the sites, ongoing conflicts between neo-nazis and anti-fascists, and the role that graffiti plays in the physical and social landscape of the sites. Chapter 4, "Follow Your Nose", explores the scent-scape of the Tunnel, as well as my attempts to capture, transport, and preserve these smells. The conclusion, "Fragments and Futures", provides a list of project ideas and topics for any future researchers.</mods:abstract><mods:name type="personal"><mods:namePart>Kimball, Sam</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/cre">creator</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name type="personal"><mods:namePart>Hamilakis, Yannis</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ths">thesis advisor</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name type="personal"><mods:namePart>Yapp, Lauren</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm>reader</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name type="corporate"><mods:namePart>Brown University.
