    <mods:abstract lang="eng">These three narratives and one short story by Charles Reis Felix are published here for the first time. “Eels,” “Rare Coins” and “Milk Bottles” are part of the unpublished novel Gently, Brother, although they can all be read independently of the novel. They constitute self-contained Great Depression-themed narratives. In the narratives featured here these three main themes are 1) getting around the scarcity of food, 2) experiencing dashed economic hopes; 3) and shoring up traditional values in the face of economic calamity. “On Being Drafted” was written as a short story.</mods:abstract>
