- Abroad and homesick, I once had an idea: to build a family tree using old forgotten photographs from my antique chest of drawers. The best picture is that of my grandparents. They sit side by side along a garden wall decorated with a single grapevine. Their outfits are black with a dash of white; their lips display fulfilled smiles. My Grandma Emília is wearing a long-sleeved black dress with a V-neck. The material on the left gathers to the waist giving her pose a touch of class. She wears a gold pin surrounded by small pearls. Grandpa Augusto wears a suit and tie, his suspenders hardly visible through the well-cut jacket. His right hand holds the mandolin he played all his life.
