- A Better Way to Store Private Data – Enabling Web Apps to Comply with Privacy Laws by Default
- Abstract
- Many software developers rely on error-prone manual scripts to handle privacy requests. Pelton, a new kind of database developed by researchers at Brown, provides correct compliance with privacy laws like the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) by organizing data primarily by user. My research addresses a problem with Pelton: it doesn't work with existing applications due to its novel API. My work makes Pelton compatible with existing applications that assume a MySQL database and provides a baseline that is easily extended to make Pelton compatible with other widely used databases, enabling developers to gain the privacy benefits of Pelton without having to rewrite their application code.
