Abstract (lang="eng")
Exploring and Travelling Three Thousand Miles Through Brazil,' from the 19th-century English traveler James W. Wells, is unique in that its author, who crossed the Brazilian sertão mostly by himself, outdoing any other traveler of the same century in Brazil, was both a technician, in the most pragmatic sense of the term, as well as an artist. As an artist, he possessed more than one skill; he did not just illustrate his texts with observational drawings of great quality; he also demonstrated his literary talent.
