More than 500,000 people of Cabo Verdean descent live in the United States due to the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which abolished immigration quotas and allowed for increased immigration to the United States, with 20,000 of them living in Rhode Island. Based on poorer health outcomes for similar immigrant communities living in Rhode Island, researchers sought to understand the current health needs of the Cabo Verdean community in Rhode Island, the majority of which is located in Pawtucket and Central Falls. The aim of this research was to conduct a health needs assessment that gathers information surrounding population demographics, general health and access, social factors, discrimination, chronic illness, and infectious disease of this community of interest.  &#13;
Methods: This research takes a mixed methods approach of a quantitative survey and qualitative key informant interviews. The survey was administered from 6/1/22 to 8/31/23 using previously validated questions and was offered in English or Cabo Verdean Creole, depending on the participant’s preference. Participants were recruited through the Cabo Verdean community center and at specific events tailored to Cabo Verdeans. Data analysis was performed to collect descriptive statistics. &#13;
Results: Quantitative results of this study compare the key findings from the administered survey to adjusted findings from the 2023 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) when possible with complete descriptive statistics available in the appendix. Key findings from key informant interviews highlight that the main barriers to healthcare for Cabo Verdeans in Rhode Island are language barriers, challenges with access &amp; communication, and low insurance quality. Informants also highlight the role that Brown University can play to promote Cabo Verdean health. &#13;
Conclusions: This health needs assessment of the Cabo Verdean community in Rhode Island sought to understand the barriers to healthcare and to gain insight into what key informants view as barriers in addition to the role Brown University should play in supporting this community.
