Abstract (lang="por")
Abstract (lang="eng")
As part of the avant-garde movements at the beginning of the 20th century, extreme brevity in literature can be pinpointed as one of the creative impulses by which the expression of modernity gained traction. Influenced by authors such as Poe, Voltaire, and Baudelaire, it is possible to find traces of that tendency in Mário de Sá-Carneiro, Fernando Pessoa, and most of all in José de Almada Negreiros, who, in the 1920s, would refine brevity and narrative in his works, creating fine examples of microfictions. Such literary practice would remain confined to the margins. However, some acknowledgement and continuation post-Orpheu would take place in the pages of the Contemporânea magazine.
