Summary
- "The relationships between art and violence mark the vital route of a diverse, rich and surprising culture, conceived by a country whose color and rhythm enthrall and dazzle. Water, jungle and blood, literature, magic and tradition intertwine in a permanent rite of passage. To open the bridges. We want peace" These evocative print collages shed light on the Venezuelan refugee diaspora escaping armed conflict in Colombia. Brodsky’s works follow charged moments along their journey to generate empathy for the trauma of their lived experience. Colombia hosts nearly three million Venezuelan refugees and migrants. Yet conflicts along the Venezuelan border and internal violence in major Colombian cities force many to flee again. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, gangs and armed groups throughout Latin America target Venezuelan migrants for forced recruitment, sex trafficking, and exploitation in illegal mines. The collaged images blur the lines between archival and artistic sources to document these historic moments. The illustrations deftly combine maps from the National Archive of Colombia and other libraries alongside the photographs of Federico Ríos Escobar, Juan Pablo Cohen, Luis Robayo, and Christian Escobar-Mora. The artist’s inscriptions transform each image into a call for social justice through peace activism.
