- Reading Ellipses, Reading Elliptically: Towards a Theory of Ellipticity…
- Abstract
- This thesis explores the question of reading with respect to ellipses. In doing so, I seek to articulate a theory of ellipticity that is also meant to serve as a theory of reading. Over the course of this thesis, I trace different modes or forms of ellipticity across various texts, including theoretical works on reading and critique, Don Mee Choi’s DMZ Colony, and Herman Melville’s “Bartleby.” Ultimately, what I mean by ellipticity is a mode that resists formulation, or that which resists form. I suggest that we adopt ellipticity as such in our approach to reading ellipses but also in our approach to reading in general.
