- There are two important nineteenth-century American essays relating to the use of the term ’Gees (or ’Guees) to refer to sailors aboard American whalers in the nineteenth century. The first one, “The ’Gees” by Herman Melville, was published in 1856, and the second one, “My Portuguese Shipmates” by Captain W. H. Macy, appeared twenty-five years later, in 1881. Both of them are reprinted here.
