This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of cesium-131 collagen tiles in patients with nBM.
Methods: Clinical information was collected for consecutive nBM patients treated at three neurosurgical centers. Actuarial local control and overall survival (OS) were calculated from the time of cesium-131 collagen tile implant.
Results: The cohort comprised 14 men and 22 women (mean age: 62.1+ 8.9 years) and 39 nBM. The histology included: 19 lung, 8 melanoma, 4 breast, 3 gastrointestinal, and 5 genitourinary metastases. The mean maximum diameter of the pre-operative BM was 3.29 cm (+1.35 cm). Gross total resection was achieved in all but one subject. The mean Karnofsky Performance Score (KPS) before resection/tile implant was 81 + 11.1. There were no perioperative complications, with the average hospital stay of 2.2 + 1.6 days. There were nine 30-day readmissions (25.0%) and seven 90-day readmissions (19.4%). With a median follow-up of 328 days, the actuarial local control rate at one year was 100%, with one local failure two years post-implant. The median OS of the cohort was 182 days. There was one case of radiation necrosis (2.6%). In terms of functional status, KPS improved or remained stable for 28 patients and worsened in 8 patients (22.2%). At the one-month follow-up, 8/36 (22.2%) patients showed persistent KPS decline relative to the pre-operative status, which was associated with shorter OS (65 vs. 211 days, p=0.02).
Conclusion: This study represents the first dedicated evaluation of cesium-131 collagen tiles in the setting of nBM, demonstrating a favorable safety and efficacy profile. The series provides a foundation for future validation and clinical applications.</mods:abstract><mods:name><mods:namePart>Taman, Mazen</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Oldam, Joseph</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Teshome, Abigail</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Chen, Hsien-Chung</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Shekher, Rohil</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Zeller, Sabrina</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Elinzano, Heinrich</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Sarangi, Sasmit</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Wong, Eric</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Rivard, Mark</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Ferreira, Clara</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Hanft, Simon</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Chen, Clark</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:originInfo><mods:dateCreated>2025</mods:dateCreated></mods:originInfo><mods:subject authority="local"><mods:topic>Brain metastases</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="local"><mods:topic>Cesium-131</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="local"><mods:topic>Collagen tile implant</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="local"><mods:topic>GammaTile</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="local"><mods:topic>Intraoperative brachytherapy</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="local"><mods:topic>Local control</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:genre>posters</mods:genre><mods:accessCondition type="use and reproduction">All rights reserved</mods:accessCondition><mods:accessCondition type="rights statement" xlink:href="http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/">In Copyright</mods:accessCondition><mods:accessCondition type="restriction on access">All Rights Reserved</mods:accessCondition><mods:identifier type="doi">10.26300/rgdx-pa24</mods:identifier></mods:mods>
