<mods:abstract lang="eng">This study examines Fernando Pessoa’s self-conception as a poet of exception, tracing its early manifestations in Alexander Search and other heteronyms. Through close reading of poems, prose fragments, and letters, it highlights how Pessoa constructed a literary identity distanced from “banal men,” privileging isolation, genius, and a mission toward “future humanity.” Engaging with aesthetic, philosophical, and sociological perspectives (Habermas, Horkheimer, Adorno, Almada Negreiros), the article situates Pessoa’s poetics within modernist tensions between individuality and collectivity, human imperfection and transcendence, ultimately affirming literature’s capacity to “improve Life.”</mods:abstract>
