Examining feminist anti-violence organizing, in particular the local Take Back the Night movement, this project suggests that carceral strategies emerged in tandem with mainstream feminism’s turn to a politics of recognition, which displaced the early movement’s more expansive, multi-dimensional notions of gender justice.
