Abstract (lang="por")
Abstract (lang="eng")
This article proposes a critical rereading of Portuguese imperial myths in Fernando Pessoa, focusing on the figures of Ulysses and of the Fifth Empire in Mensagem. Drawing on a postcolonial perspective and the Benjaminian critique of historicism, it argues that Pessoa does not linearly reproduce the Portuguese epic imagination, but rather reinscribes it within a modern, fragmentary, and critical logic in which myth, memory, and ruin coexist. In dialogue with Luís de Camões, Dante Alighieri, and António Vieira, Pessoa reconfigures Ulysses as a figure of wandering and cultural transmutation, shifting the idea of empire from the territorial sphere to the symbolic and linguistic one. The article also examines the tensions between expansion and rootedness and proposes a reading of Portuguese modernity marked by the coexistence of temporalities and voices silenced by nationalist narratives.
