Abstract
Front-line treatment for opioid use disorder is pharmacotherapy, but because of difficulties with patient retention and adherence, leading national organizations support supplementing medication with behavioral treatment. This systematic review describes the impact of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on relapse rates, opioid misuse, addiction severity, anxiety, and depression among people who misuse opioids. Articles from five different databases from inception through December 28th, 2021 were reviewed. 18 studies were identified, but only three studies of the same intervention type reported the same outcome measures at the same follow-up periods which precluded conducting a meta-analysis. Across all intervention types, the MBI groups showed improved relapse rates, opioid misuse scores, addiction severity scores and depression scores compared to control conditions. Differences in anxiety scores between the MBI and control conditions were generally not significant. The findings of this review show that MBIs are a promising supplement to medication for opioid use disorder treatment, but also emphasize the need for more standardization of outcome measures and timing of follow-up periods.
