- The essay discusses the relationship between nature and society in the work of José de Alencar. Reaffirming the unity among the "three Alencares" postulated by Antonio Candido in ‘Formação da Literatura Brasileira’, the essay argues that Alencar's representation of nature, both in Indianist and urban novels, underscores profound contradictions in Brazilian society.

Reafirmando a unidade entre os "três Alencares" postulado por Antonio Candido na "Formação da Literatura Brasileira", o ensaio argumenta que a representação de Alencar da natureza, tanto em romances indianistas como urbanos, ressalta profundas contradições na sociedade brasileira.
