- Even though there is an abundance of research on the history and culture associated to the imaginary of the Cuban Revolution, an encompassing understanding of the active participation of Latin American poetry in its construction during the long global sixties is still a pending task. Scholars offered scattered approaches to writing styles (“conversacionalismo”, “exteriorismo”, “antipoesía,” etc), instead my dissertation proposes to trace meaningful connections between poetry and the revolutionary experience in the region. Looking at poetic, historic, and political documents, this study offers a cross-disciplinary understanding of the relationship between poetic writing and the expectations of radical change triggered by the Cuban revolution. I aimed to analyze how poetry configured a heterodox archive of the insurgent aspirations. I demonstrated that the poetry of the times of promise presents time as an anachronistic structure that makes visible the temporal dislocations resulting from the desire for radical change. The first chapter analyzes the rapport between pre-revolutionary Cuban poetry and utopian thinking, and its reconfigurations following the revolution according to racialized and gendered reclamations. I develop the concept of strategic anachronism, which is a writing principle that depicts revolutionary endeavors as a long-term presence to legitimize its development and its future. The second chapter examines the dissemination of expectations of radical change beyond Cuba through motives such as the poeta-guerrillero and the messianic horizon that acquire particularities of gender and spirituality in poetry influenced by decolonial feminism, the liberation theology, and the Andean utopia. In the third chapter, I develop the concept of critical anachronism, which is a principle of writing that highlights the temporal asymmetry between the virtuality of the promise and the crisis of a present threatened by the potential use of nuclear weapons, political repression, and counterrevolutionary violence. The critical anachronism scrutinizes the conditions of articulation of the desired future by identifying the recurrence of dystopian events that have hindered the fulfillment of the promise. The principle of critical anachronism sheds light on the emergence of the profile of the anomalous prophet and on the textual manifestations of the precarious context of writing, such as material austerity and skeptical language. Distinctively, this study reclaims poetry to address the revolutionary spirit from a Latin American perspective. It also contributes to the diversification of interdisciplinary approaches to studies on Latin American Long Global Sixties, the Cold War, and reflections on the kind of language that revolutions inspire.
