- All About Me: Rewriting Subjectivity in the Poet's Autobiography
- Abstract
- This thesis looks at the autobiographical writing of two second-generation New York School poets, Alice Notley and Eileen Myles, arguing that they use this form to respond to late 20th century debates about the role of the subject in literature. It situates itself in the wake of Roland Barthes' essay "The Death of the Author" as well as during the proliferation of post-structuralist inspired Language poetry. It argues that--while both Notley and Myles exist within postmodernity, aware that selves are constructed, relational and slippery--they use autobiography to render the poet more visible among discourses that seek to erase it.
