- Abstract
- Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 65% of its population living under the national poverty line. They have the highest rates of infant and maternal mortality, malnutrition and persons living with HIV/AIDS in the Western Hemisphere. The lack of trained healthcare professionals contributes to health disparities in Haiti and training an adequate number of physicians remains a challenge. In 2010, St. Damien Collaborative was formed between St. Damien Pediatric Hospital and 14 US medical centers to build the capacity for pediatric care in Haiti. The program provides pediatric residents in Haiti an opportunity to participate in clinical rotations at partner sites in the US, gaining exposure to more technologically advanced subspecialties. In return, residents from the US spend four weeks rotating through St. Damien Hospital in Haiti. This bidirectional exchange program aims to improve the patient's quality of care, support medical education and support research capacity development. The purpose of this project was to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the exchange through a qualitative and quantitative survey in order to strengthen the partnership in the future.
