Abstract (lang="eng")
This article examines the interplay between legibility and illegibility in manuscript transcription, arguing that textual scholarship operates within irreducible uncertainty. Reading handwritten documents is framed as a differential and contextual process in which micro-level decipherment depends on macro-level interpretative frameworks, including knowledge of an author’s style and intertexts. Illegibility, rather than being fully resolvable, must sometimes be preserved as an epistemic limit. Drawing on the digital edition of The Duke of Parma, the discussion highlights how genetic criticism and TEI-based encoding enable the modelling of writing processes through the transcription of variants, deletions, and compositional traces. The study further contends that, in the case of unfinished and fragmentary works, editorial intervention assumes an authorial dimension: transcription and organization effectively produce the text. Ultimately, readability emerges not solely from graphic recognition but from the interaction between material inscription and hermeneutic projection, whereby the intelligible and the illegible remain dynamically intertwined.
