- Fernando Pessoa’s Fausto occupies a crucial place within his vast and fragmented body of work, extending from his earliest literary activity to the final years of his life. Composed largely before the emergence of the heteronyms, these texts already anticipate many of the themes that would later define Pessoa’s writing. At its core, Fausto stages the horror before the mystery of being and of the world—a motif that recurs throughout Pessoa’s oeuvre. Building on Pittella’s recent chronological edition, this study examines how that central theme unfolds across the different texts of Fausto.

- O Fausto de Fernando Pessoa ocupa um lugar crucial no seu vasto e fragmentado corpus, estendendo-se desde os primeiros momentos da sua atividade literária até aos últimos anos da sua vida. Composto em grande parte antes do surgimento dos heterónimos, estes textos já antecipam muitos dos temas que viriam a marcar a escrita de Pessoa. No seu núcleo, o Fausto encena o horror perante o mistério do ser e do mundo – motivo que atravessa de forma recorrente a obra pessoana. A partir da recente edição cronológica de Pittella, este estudo examina como esse tema central se desenvolve ao longo dos diferentes textos de Fausto.
