Abstract
Embedded, pragmatic, randomized controlled trials (ePCTs) of nonpharmaceutical interventions to help manage agitated behaviors in nursing home residents with dementia often rely on changes in aggregate measures of behavioral frequency in measuring their success. However, having staff identify specific target behaviors that they believe may be modifiable with the intervention may be a more appropriate evaluation strategy. Our goal was to assess the relative change in Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory behavior scores among nursing home residents with staff-identified target behaviors using data from an ePCT of a personalized music intervention called Music & MEmory: A Pragmatic TRIal for Nursing Home Residents with ALzheimer’s Disease (METRIcAL).
