- This article examines how Fernando Pessoa mythologises the English language and literary tradition through his English poetry. Often dismissed by critics as a weak imitation of William Shakespeare, Pessoa’s English verse can instead be read as an attempt to construct and legitimise an English literary identity of his own. Drawing on his Anglo-South African upbringing and his lifelong distance from England, Pessoa reimagines Englishness as both inheritance and aspiration. In this sense, his engagement with the English canon resembles other processes of cultural assimilation, such as T. S. Eliot’s self-fashioning within English literature. The article argues that Pessoa’s appropriation of English literary myths becomes an act of poetic self-creation, reshaping both his authorial identity and his relationship with literary tradition.

- Este artigo examina a forma como Fernando Pessoa mitifica a língua inglesa e a tradição literária inglesa através da sua poesia em inglês. Frequentemente desvalorizada pela crítica como uma imitação débil de William Shakespeare, a poesia inglesa de Pessoa pode antes ser lida como uma tentativa de construir e legitimar uma identidade literária inglesa própria. Partindo da sua formação anglo-sul-africana e do seu afastamento permanente de Inglaterra, Pessoa reconfigura a ideia de englishness como herança e aspiração. Neste sentido, o seu diálogo com o cânone inglês aproxima-se de outros processos de assimilação cultural, como o de T. S. Eliot na literatura inglesa. O artigo defende que esta apropriação dos mitos literários ingleses constitui um acto de criação poética de si mesmo, capaz de reformular simultaneamente a identidade autoral de Pessoa e a sua relação com a tradição literária.
