Abstract (lang="eng")
As theorized by Umberto Eco, literary texts are inherently “open”, their interpretation becoming autonomous from authorial intention. This tension intensifies in unfinished and unpublished works, whose instability complicates both hermeneutic and editorial practices. This paper examines these issues through a genetic analysis of The Duke of Parma, an incomplete drama by Fernando Pessoa. When a text survives only in fragments, interpretation becomes especially unstable, echoing Jerome McGann’s notion of hermeneutics as a “house built of sand”. Genetic criticism must therefore interpret variants without a final version as reference. Drawing on the concept of macro-variant (Almuth Grésillon) and Gianfranco Contini’s systemic approach to variation, the paper identifies patterns in Pessoa’s usus scribendi, focusing on character construction, dramatic action, and performative indications.
