<mods:abstract lang="eng">We discuss here the literary system proposed by Antonio Candido. The idea is to broaden the understanding of the theoretical scheme in application to oral literature, especially that manifested in northeastern Brazil and, more specifically, in the hinterland. From this, we seek to understand how the web of regionalism meanings is formed in this space, materialized, mainly, in fabulations and records collected from oral culture (reflected in folklore) and gathered in the most different supports and literary genres. The methodological path highlights the importance of orality in debate with the graphocentric culture. The historical documentation found goes from the nineteenth century to part of the twentieth. The hypothesis defended is that an opening to this point of view in Brazilian literary studies favors other readings of the history of literature in Brazil, a country that, when facing up to half of the 900s high illiteracy rates, retained in the collective memory the bases of a complex identity and a rich cultural manifestation.</mods:abstract>
