Abstract (lang="eng")
In La Sapienza, Joseph, a retired academic, reflects on the bittersweet nature of aging. As he navigates life in Porto, working on a final research project, Joseph becomes increasingly aware of the contrast between the unchanging vibrancy of the world around him and his own inexorable decline. The blinking sign of the nightclub La Sapienza across the street becomes a symbol of unattainable wisdom and acceptance of mortality. While he can observe and continue his work, he realizes that entering the realm of wisdom — fully accepting the impermanence of life — is a step he cannot take.
