Abstract
During the fetal period through the first two years of life, maternal and fetal undernutrition can have long-term irreversible biological and psycho-social implications. We used the Clinical Assessment of Nutritional Status (CANSCORE) to identify fetal malnutrition (FM) within 48 hours of delivery and investigate its impact on the linear growth and nutritional status outcomes of a longitudinal growth cohort of mother-infant pairs in Leyte, The Philippines. We found that FM was associated with poor linear growth up to two years after birth when compared to non-malnourished infants. In this setting, infants with FM do not exhibit catch-up growth by 24 months and should therefore have access to fortified formula and high caloric, protein-rich supplementary foods.
