Abstract:: In this essay, I present and analyze Variety, a series of static images created by Edgar Pêra using artificial intelligence and motivated by the work of Fernando Pessoa. Firstly, I try to establish a few symbolic links between artificial intelligence and Pessoa’s work to subsequently reflect on the impact of algorithmic processes on cultural production, particularly in connection with a more extended social history of artificial intelligence. To this end, I discuss Pêra’s creations from a material perspective that focuses on critical software studies and is oriented towards thinking of objects as the results of computational and cultural coding and decoding procedures.; Neste ensaio apresento e analiso Variety, um conjunto de imagens estáticas criadas por Edgar Pêra com recurso a inteligência artificial e motivadas pela obra de Fernando Pessoa. Num primeiro momento, procuro estabelecer algumas ligações simbólicas entre inteligência artificial e a obra pessoana de modo a refletir, depois, sobre o impacto dos processos algorítmicos na produção cultural, nomeadamente em ligação com uma mais longa história social da inteligência artificial. Para este fim, reflito sobre as criações de Pêra adotando uma perspetiva material focada nos estudos críticos do software e orientada para pensar os objetos enquanto resultados de procedimentos de codificação e descodificação computacional e cultural.
