A partir de um filme de 1928 sobre a produção de um número do Diário de Notícias, procuraremos explorar formas de Modernismo banal, ou vernacular, partilhadas tanto por aqueles que tomaram contacto com criações artísticas modernistas, como por um público mais vasto de leitores de jornais e espectadores de cinema. Organizando a sua narrativa ao longo de vinte e quarto horas na vida da cidade – à semelhança de outras sinfonias urbanas cinematográficas contemporâneas –, a montagem do filme permite-lhe revelar as várias camadas que compõem o trabalho jornalístico. Neste sentido, o filme mostra-nos não só como o jornal preenche o quotidiano moderno, mas também como a narrativa cinematográfica é a forma de representação mais eficaz para dar conta dessa ubiquidade. Simultaneamente, os folhetins jornalísticos, género literário de grande popularidade, responderam ao desafio narrativo colocado tanto pelo cinema como pelo Modernismo através de metáforas cinematográficas. This article analyses the relation between journalism and Modernism in the 1920s. Taking a 1928 film on the production of an edition of Diário de Notícias as its point of departure, it seeks to explore forms of banal (or vernacular) modernism shared by both those who were familiar with the works of Modernism, and by a wider audience of newspaper readers and moviegoers. Organizing its narrative throughout a period of twenty-four hours in the city life―like other contemporary urban symphonies―, the film’s montage allows it to reveal the different layers of journalistic work. In this sense, the film shows us not only how newspapers fill the everyday, but also how film narrative can be seen as the most effective form of representation of journalistic ubiquity.
