<mods:abstract lang="eng">The artist's superiority in respect to the political-ideological, theme which trespasses João do Rio's literary work, going beyond the chronicles about Brazil political life of his time, is clearly stated in an homonymous text, motivated by his readings of Nietzsche. On the other hand, it allows to grasp the position of the journalist-writer as an "intelectual" when he incorporates "the radical of the occasion" (Candido) and brings to the scene the ruins of Rio de Janeiro's belle époque. Or even when he takes part facing the political problems, in contrast to the mundane chronicle of the social elite "charmers". Thus, the proposed paper intends to stress out the political bias of Paulo Barreto and to discuss his relations to contemporaneity, using the Rancière and Agamben formulations. Such analytical procedure evokes the notion of anachronism that helps reading João do Rio as contemporary to us.</mods:abstract>
