This thesis explores Indigenous women’s activisms in the late-1970s to mid-1980s United States, which filled a dire lacuna in organizing to address the needs of Native women, youth, and future generations. They did so through building communal and interpersonal relations of power and care in ways that galvanized movements for sovereignty and kin, despite the seemingly insurmountable settler-colonial violences of cisheteropatriarchy, capitalist extraction, and incarceration. Through the largely untold histories, activisms, and theorizations of four Native women political prisoners––Yvonne Wanrow/Swan a Sinixt Arrow Lakes Band Colville woman, Rita Silk-Nauni a Standing Rock Sioux woman, Angie Whiterock a Paiute woman, and Raven Darkwing a Cherokee woman––and their friends, this thesis argues that their fights for intersectional and intergenerational justice helped forge a distinctive liberatory political imagination that has become central to struggles for livable and just futures in the present decolonial moment.
