<mods:abstract lang="eng">'Free City' – a novel written by João Almino (2010) – features the making of Brasília, from its initial stage to its inauguration. It draws on factual data to develop a narrative in which the reconstruction of the real event merges with the power of imagination of countless narrators. The fragmenting between the realm of the real and that of fiction adds to the rupture of the sequence of the story and the conventional paradigms of a narration and the incompleteness of the story, which must be reorganized and fulfilled by the reader. This essay starts from this observation and discusses the probable and unclarified death of the messianic character, Valdivino, by linking the meanings of his death to the intersection between literature, memory and identity and the disappearance, in the Amazon, of Colonel Percy Fawcett. By doing so, the article illustrates the strength of the collective imagination and its appearance in literature.</mods:abstract>
