- O ensaio analisa a revista Orpheu como gesto fundacional da modernidade estética portuguesa, centrando-se na articulação crítica entre Fernando Pessoa e José de Almada Negreiros. Partindo da proposta de Mariana Pinto dos Santos, segundo a qual Almada foi um dos principais impulsionadores do mito pessoano ao criar o célebre retrato do poeta, defende-se que essa imagem constituiu uma operação simbólica decisiva. Orpheu apresenta-se, assim, como espaço de fricção estética, espectralidade moderna e resistência à canonização. Almada, enquanto artista intermedial e figura estratégica do modernismo, desempenha um papel central na transmissão visual e performativa desse legado.

- The essay examines the journal Orpheu as a foundational gesture of Portuguese aesthetic modernity, focusing on the critical articulation between Fernando Pessoa and José de Almada Negreiros. Drawing on Mariana Pinto dos Santos’s proposal that Almada was one of the principal agents in shaping the Pessoa myth through his celebrated portrait of the poet, the essay argues that this image constituted a decisive symbolic operation. Orpheu thus emerges as a site of aesthetic friction, modern spectrality, and resistance to canonization. As an intermedial artist and a strategic figure of modernism, Almada plays a central role in the visual and performative transmission of this legacy.
