<mods:abstract type="general" displayLabel="Scope and Contents note">The monument depicts the members of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry who, in 1866, founded Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. The work includes two soldiers and Captain Foster, their white commander, who all are shown atop a pedestal. Behind this main group, another USCT soldier on top of the pedestal assists another standing bronze figure to ascend the pedestal. On the base of the pedestal is a bas-relief of three marching soldiers. The commemorative work also includes two bronze soldiers, wearing knapsacks and bed rolls and whose facial expressions appear weary, walking up the lawn toward the front of the monument.</mods:abstract>
