- Abstract
- Abstract
(lang="eng")
- The article offers a critical revisitation of Fernando Pessoa’s famous letter to Adolfo Casais Monteiro (13 January 1935), one of the key texts of Portuguese modernism. It departs from a different reading of a vowel in a word found in the long epistle, examining the philological principle of lectio facilior and its application in the many editions of the letter. The analysis includes technical aspects of typing, editorial variants, and philosophical reflections on creation, language, and immortality, with references to Plato’s Symposium and Pessoa’s The Mariner. By exploring the semantics of both readings, the article reassesses Pessoa’s relation to his heteronyms and argues for a lectio difficilior that better fits his literary context.
