In this interview, Dr Leona Vaughn discusses her family history, being raised in a mixed cultural household and how Liverpool’s architectural history is intwined with the legacy of slavery. Please be advised that this interview may contain stories of trauma, both personal and community-wide related to the legacies of racial slavery and colonialism. It is preserved to document the emotions and experiences of the individual interviewed. Some language in this transcript may be offensive. Dr Leona Vaughn is a mum of two, born in Liverpool to a working-class family with African, Caribbean, Arab and Irish roots. She is a sociologist with extensive experience in equality and human rights working in local, national and international charities, higher education (University of Liverpool and United Nations University) and UK criminal justice system. As national policy advisor in the Crown Prosecution Service she worked to create the first ever public policies for racial and religious hate crimes and, in response to the murder of Anthony Walker in 2005, she created the first ever award-winning national positive action programme to increase representation of Black prosecutors in England and Wales. She was also the first Black Non-Executive Director of Liverpool Football Club Foundation. Leona writes and researches on topics of risk and harm prevention in social policy and the impacts on the rights of racialized and minoritized populations globally, especially women and children.
