- Originally published as a booklet in 1916 by O Independente, a long-defunct Portuguese-language weekly in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Vida dos Marinheiros is an autobiographical narrative in verse by Manuel Thomaz Lopes. The unwieldy original title was Vida dos Marinheiros Manuel Lopes, Joao Ventura, Francisco Marcial (das Flores) e do Piloto Manuel Francisco Santos (do Corvo). It covers a period of twenty years beginning in 1896. Written in quatrains, Vida dos Marinheiros is of more historical than literary interest. It is an account of the author’s mundane struggle to earn a living, his relationships with employers and coworkers, and his encounter with indigenous people in the Arctic. This translation, in prose, is based on a reprint edition produced by the Camara Municipal de Lajes das Flores in 1988, with an introduction by J. A. Gomes Vieira.
