Abstract (lang="eng")
Julio Bressane loves traces. His gaze turns everything into a trace, making objects, places, and people indexes of some past. From the abandoned studio of Cinédia in O Rei do Baralho to pre-Columbian ruins in Viagem Através do Brasil, Bressane evokes the mystery of the trace. In O Batuque dos Astros, he films the spaces inhabited by Fernando Pessoa, claiming not only the poet but all of Portuguese literature. The film serves as an inventory of Bressane’s interaction with Pessoa, highlighting his influences over the years. Moreover, the film represents a turning point in Bressane’s career, as he begins to investigate his own work to create art. The seemingly conventional ending reveals a mystery, a trace, a remembrance of... nobody?
