Abstract (lang="eng")
At the crossroads of Cape-Verdean and Portuguese literary histories, this article examines João Manuel Varela’s ambivalent reception of Fernando Pessoa. Close readings reveal an initial phase of admiration for Pessoa as a revolutionary, followed by decades of strategic silence while Varela forged explicitly anti-colonial poetic identities. From the 1980s onward, however, Pessoa resurfaces, exposing the unresolved tension between African cultural self-definition and inherited Western models. By tracing this three-stage trajectory, the study repositions Pessoa as a latent but influential presence in African literary modernity and nuances prevailing binaries of colonial versus local inspiration.
