It begins with the publication of some of her work from 1946 to 1950 and from then on to a reporting of a few events in her life: the publication of a book of poems, the staging of one of her plays, and a trial in which she is charged with offenses against public morality. After 1950, however, none of her original work appears in the journal’s pages, nor is she quoted on any matter whatsoever. It is notable that the news in 1969 that Natália Correia was about to be tried for crimes against public morality appears on the first page of the Diario, while a subsequent report in 1970 of testimony favorable to her case is relegated to page four. This trial, it should be noted, took place before the furor caused by the censoring of Novas Cartas Portuguesas by the 3 “Marias,” in 1972, by which date New Bedford’s Diário had ceased publication.
