M.)--Brown University, 2026</mods:note><mods:genre authority="aat">theses</mods:genre><mods:abstract>This thesis presents the design, construction, and initial validation of an enhanced homogeneous isotropic turbulence chamber developed as an enlarged and improved version of a previous laboratory platform. The work focuses on chamber development rather than on complete turbulence characterization. The redesigned system preserves the impeller-driven truncated-cube concept of the earlier chamber while introducing a larger geometry, revised corner drive assemblies, improved access features, updated sealing methods, and a more robust support structure.&#13;

The chamber also incorporates an upgraded control architecture, including eight encoders, an Arduino GIGA controller, a PCA9685 PWM-distribution module, centralized power distribution, and PID-based motor-speed balancing. These additions were introduced to improve motor-speed synchronization across the eight-motor array and to establish a more controllable experimental platform.&#13;

Initial validation focused on system-level functionality. Preliminary tests showed that the redesigned chamber could operate as an integrated electro-mechanical system and that encoder-based feedback could bring the motor speeds into a common operating range after startup.
