These skills can be taught, however, medical education lacks complete integration of palliative care longitudinally throughout curriculums. To build a culture in which these communication skills are broadly used across medical specialties, we must expose and support learners early on. It was found that students at the Warren Alpert Medical School (n=68) believe palliative care should be integrated into our curriculum and that palliative care education is valuable for all physicians despite their intended specialty choice. Specifically, students believe it is important for surgical specialties to be trained in palliative care and equipped with communication skills. The goal of this project is to improve the medical curriculum at Brown Medical School through clinical integration with a specific emphasis on surgical specialties. This will be done in 3 phases. The first phase includes a pre-clinical elective that focuses on providing a palliative care foundation and exposure to various topics and skills. The next phase includes a newly developed clerkship elective that provides an opportunity for 4th-year students pursuing a surgical career specific palliative care exposure focused on surgical decision making. The third phase, SurgTalk, which is a novel surgical serious illness communication course created by Brian Mikolasko, MD and the Department of Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, exposes surgical residents to palliative care through a series of interactive sessions aimed at teaching palliative care communication skills. With these three phases, longitudinal education can be provided to students and medical trainees throughout different stages of their learning to reinforce and build upon valuable communication skills.</mods:abstract><mods:name><mods:namePart>Travers, Brenton</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name><mods:namePart>Mikolasko, Brian</mods:namePart><mods:role><mods:roleTerm authority="marcrelator" authorityURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators" valueURI="http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut">Author</mods:roleTerm></mods:role></mods:name><mods:name type="corporate"><mods:namePart>Brown University.
