Abstract (lang="eng")
On June 6, 1950, budding Portuguese author Natália Correia embarked on her first trip to the United States, in the company of her American husband William Creighton Hyler. Armed with press credentials, Correia gained access to an impressive array of powerful and influential American figures. The newspaper Diário de Lisbôa published four articles she had contracted with them to write during the trip about her initial impressions of Boston, coastal Maine, New York City, and Washington, D.C. They would comprise a forerunner to Correia’s 1951 book about her journey, Descobri que era europeia: impressões duma viagem à América, which Katharine F. Baker and Emanuel Melo have translated into English as In America, I discovered I was European.

In America, I discovered I was European.
