- Fernando Pessoa’s semi-heteronym, Bernardo Soares, develops a nihilistic and existentialist metaphys¬ics of death and dying. The Book of Disquiet employs philosophical arguments founded on his dream life. His most startling and paradoxical conclusion is that we enter death while already dead. Could this be true? It can, but only within a special word model, and I will show how and why. I discuss the following ideas: at every passing moment, eve¬rything dies; also, the flow of time constantly takes us closer to death. Pessoa focuses on hu¬man ideals—love, art, and dreaming—which, he argues, deny life. Paradoxically, to live well is to deny life, and then you die: a dead person dies. My method combines literary criticism and philosophical analysis.

- O semi-heterónimo de Fernando Pessoa, Bernardo Soares, desenvolve uma metafísica niilista e existen¬cialista da morte e do morrer. O Livro do Desassossego emprega argumentos filosófi¬cos ba¬seados na sua vida onírica. A sua conclusão mais surpreendente e paradoxal é que entramos na morte já estando mortos. Poderá isto ser verdade? Pode, mas apenas dentro de um modelo linguístico específico, e mostrarei como e porquê. Discuto as seguintes ideias: a cada mo¬mento que passa, tudo morre; além disso, o fluxo do tempo leva-nos constantemente para a morte. Pessoa centra-se nos ideais humanos — o amor, a arte e o sonho — que, segundo ele, negam a vida. Paradoxalmente, viver bem é negar a vida e, então, morrer: um morto morre. O meu método combina crítica literária e análise filosófica.
