Approximately 12 million individuals in the United States over forty years old have some form of visual impairment, with the prevalence of ocular disease in the U.S expected to continue to rise. Objectives regarding ophthalmology curricula put forth by Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) and American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) form a framework of physical examination and diagnostic skills that medical students should master. The elective offered by Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and its ophthalmic division has been updated to align with these recommendations and require self-directed learning. Data collected from pre-existing evaluations of the course from January 2017 through March 2021 was utilized to determine if this curricular update resulted in a statistically significant change to student-perceived clarity and achievement of course objectives. A significant difference was found in student-perceived clarity and fulfillment of course objectives before and after curricular change as evidenced in evaluation responses, but there was no significant change in student-perceived specialty insight, quality of teaching, and overall rating of elective before and after curricular change. While teaching quality and specialty exposure remained unchanged, students had more defined course expectations and felt that these objectives were achieved throughout the course after the curricular update.
