The images here are just a fraction of the burial grounds dedicated to enslaved persons, "contrabands," and freed persons. Many of these cemeteries and memorial parks have suffered greatly over the years--some have been desecrated and destroyed while others have been long ignored and fallen into disrepair. The monuments and memorials in this collection are part of local efforts to restore and recognize the importance of black life in death, including the Freedman's Cemetery Memorial in Dallas, Texas; African Burial Ground National Memorial in New York City; African Burying Ground Memorial in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia.

As of 2026, the Black Cemetery Network (blackcemeterynetwork.org) has documented 201 Black cemeteries in New England, the Middle Atlantic, the South, and the Midwest. Some of these cemeteries are dedicated to enslaved persons such as the Enslaved Cemetery in Mahwah, New Jersey; Betton Hills Plantation Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida; and the Enslaved Burial Ground in Old Round Rock Cemetery in Round Rock, Texas.

In 2022, the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Program authorized the National Park Service to administer an annual grant program to assist in the preservation of historic Black burial grounds.
