- The article reviews the economic history of Central Asia's five countries since independence with emphasis on the direct and indirect impacts of each country's resource endowment and variations in the world prices of their resource exports. It analyzes the extent to which the past can guide their economic future and ask what other considerations may be important including the role of other countries particularly Russia, China and the U.S. and the importance of their national leaders' specific qualities in economic policy making in autocratic states. It notes that Central Asia's future will depend on world prices of energy, key minerals and cotton, interests of external powers and internal developments.
